What is an ISRC code and why does your money depend on it?

Every stream, sale, and radio spin has to land in the right recording's account before it can pay you. The ISRC is the tag that makes that happen.

The short answer: an ISRC is the unique ID for one recording. It's how streams, sales, and airplay get counted and paid to the right track — so the money reaches you and not someone else.

What "ISRC" actually means

ISRC stands for International Standard Recording Code. Think of it as a fingerprint for a single recording — the exact audio file of a specific song. Wherever that recording travels — Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, radio, a download store — the ISRC is the identifier that ties the play back to your track. No matching ID, no clean way to route the money to you.

Why your money depends on it

Streaming platforms, download stores, and airplay monitors don't recognize your song by its title — plenty of songs share a title. They recognize it by its ISRC. That code is what lets a stream on the other side of the world get tracked and credited to the right recording, so it flows into your royalties instead of getting lost or paid to the wrong track.

Who assigns it — and why you might want your own

Most of the time your distributor assigns an ISRC for you when you upload a release, and that's fine to get started. But you can also get your own ISRCs so that you control them. The upside: your codes stay consistent across every release and every distributor you use, instead of changing hands if you ever switch services. If you're building a real catalog, owning your ISRCs keeps your recordings tracked cleanly under you.
