GTL Music Distribution: How to Get Your Music on GTL / ViaPath
Done Deal Digital LLC · June 5, 2026
If JPay is the iTunes of the prison world, GTL is the Spotify. It's the streaming side of prison music — a subscription service people listen to on facility tablets — and it's a second audience most independent artists never reach. Here's how GTL music distribution actually works.
Wait — is GTL the same as ViaPath?
Yes. Global Tel*Link (GTL) rebranded to ViaPath Technologies in 2022. The prison music service is still widely called "GTL Music," so you'll see both names — but they're the same company. If you've been searching ViaPath and getting confused, that's why.
How GTL music works
GTL Music is a subscription streaming service curated for the corrections environment — think of it as a closed Spotify available on prison tablets. Listeners stream from a catalog rather than buying individual downloads (that's the JPay side). It runs across a large number of facilities, and the catalog is carefully filtered to fit the correctional setting.
How do you get your music on GTL?
Same as JPay: you can't upload to GTL directly. Both GTL and JPay are fed by the same behind-the-scenes pipeline — Neurotic Media, and increasingly Audible Magic / MediaNet. So you distribute through a service that delivers to that pipeline, and your music reaches GTL and JPay together. Pick the right distributor and the right pipeline, and you're on the streaming kiosks.
How does GTL pay?
Because GTL is streaming, you don't earn a fixed price per sale like you do on JPay's downloads. Instead, you earn a proportionate share of subscription revenue every time your music is streamed — and you keep 100% of what's collected for your tracks. The more your music gets played inside, the more you earn, month after month. It's the recurring, long-tail side of prison income.
The content rules still apply
GTL curates hard for the corrections market. The rule is the same across the whole prison system: your audio can be explicit, but your metadata can't. Track titles, artist name, and artwork have to be clean — no profanity, no violence/gang/weapon references, and no Parental Advisory logo on the cover. Get the metadata clean and the routing right, and your music streams inside.
