Start here: a network isn't how many people know your name — it's how many people will do something when you ask. The real ones are few: the peers who move with you, the connector who opens a door, the vet who vouches when you're not in the room. You build that by being useful first and keeping your word, not by sliding into a hundred DMs with a link. Reciprocity is the whole game — give before you take, and keep giving.
What a real network actually is — and what it isn't
A network is not a list. It's not your follower count, your phone contacts, or the business cards in a drawer. Those are names. A network is the small group of people who will actually do something when your music needs it — answer the call, make the introduction, put you on the bill, send the beat, tell a room full of the right people that you're worth a listen. Names don't do any of that. People who owe you nothing but move for you anyway — that's the thing worth building.
Run the test on anyone you'd call a “connection.” Would they pick up if you called right now? Would they plug you into a room you couldn't get into alone? Would they vouch for you when you're not there to vouch for yourself? If the honest answer is no across the board, that's not a network — that's a follow. Most artists have a thousand of the second kind and can't name three of the first.
Followers are an audience, not a network (the trap)
Here's the trap the whole internet sells you: that a big number next to your name is the same as having people. It isn't. Followers are reach — an audience. A network is relationships. Those are two different things, and only one of them opens a door. You can have forty thousand followers and nobody to call when you need a feature, a show, or a co-sign. Reach is people seeing you. A network is people moving for you. Chasing the first and calling it the second is why so many artists feel connected to everybody and helped by no one.
None of this means the audience is worthless — it's how the world finds your music. It means don't confuse the scoreboard with the team. The number is nice. The five people who'll pick up the phone at midnight are the career.

The people who network the other way — take, take, ask, ask — get clocked fast. Everybody can feel a one-way relationship. Reciprocity isn't a trick or a tactic; it's just being the kind of person other people want in their corner. Build that reputation and the network builds itself around you.
Who's actually in a real network
A network isn't a crowd — it's a handful of roles, and you need a few of each. When you know what to look for, you stop trying to “know everybody” and start building the small group that actually moves things.

Nobody starts with a network. Everybody starts with nobody. The move isn't “go meet important people” — it's this order, and the order is what most artists get backwards.
- Start where you already are. The engineer at the studio, the artist on the same bill, the fan who comments every time — your first network is already around you. You don't need to reach the top of the industry. You need to get real with the people at your own level, because you'll rise together.
- Show up, consistently. In person and online. Be at the shows, the sessions, the open mics, the group chats. Networks are built by being around — people move for the face they keep seeing, not the DM they got once.
